Sew a Button Activity Page

Buttons often come off of clothing. It's easy to sew a button. When first learning, an adult can help. You will need scissors, a needle, some thread, a button and a little patience!

Select a thread color and button that closely matches the fabric or other buttons.

Cut a piece of thread to a length of about 20 inches.

Feed the thread through the eye hole of a needle.

Move the needle to the middle of the thread and fold the thread so that the ends meet. Make a tight knot at the end of the doubled thread. The thread should stay doubled through all of the following steps.

Position the button where it needs to be on the top side of the fabric.

From the underside of the fabric, push the needle up through the fabric and through one button hole. Pull until the knot is anchored against fabric.

Push the needle down through the next hole to the underside of the fabric.Pull the needle until the button is flat on the fabric and the thread is tight..

If the button has 2 holes... push the needle up through the underside of the fabric and through a hole. Now the needle is on the top side of the fabric. Pull the thread until it is tight. Push the needle down through the other hole. The button should be attached to the fabric. Continue pushing the needle down a hole, through the fabric then pulling the needle up through the other hole. Repeat until the button is secure.

If the button has 4 holes... push the needle through the underside of the fabric and up through an empty hole. Now the needle is on the top side of the fabric Pull the thread up until it is tight. Then push the needle down through the other empty hole until it is tight. Continue pushing the needle down a hole, through the fabric then pulling the needle up through another hole. Repeat until the button is secure.

Finish with the needle and thread on the underside of the fabric. Put a knot close the fabric by pushing the needle through strands of thread that are holding the button in place. Then make a loop with the thread, and pull the needle through the loop. Make 2 tight knots to be certain that the button stays in place.
